Can we Save Precious Water and at the same time Save Money? Yes, we can.

There are 101 ways to save our most valued and precious resource ..... WATER. However, before I go on, I would like to give credits to the numerous Hubbers that have contributed much writing on this subject.

One Sunday, while I was teaching my son about the mass of object in water, an idea suddenly came to my mind. I ran to the toilet and remove the cover on the sanitary bowl. My wife thought I was going nuts standing there starring at the flushing system. I flushed and studied the entire flushing process.

The water level and floating ball dropped and when water was re-pumped into the tank, the floating ball slowly raised to a point whereby I deliberately used my fingers to stop it from rising further. That was the point where I knew I could save "unseen water".

For a start, I filled a (500ml) mineral water bottle with water and lowered it into the sanitary water tank. In this case, I had increased the water mass in the tank by 500ml. And every time I flush, 500ml of water was saved and yet able to flush well! Then I doubled the water bottle to two instead of one and extended this water saving method to my other 2 toilets and that added up to 3 litres of water saved.

Estimated Calculation

Saving of 1 litre multiply by 3 toilets at the rate of say 10 conservative flushing per day per toilet will amount to 30 litres for one day!

After a few months of experiment, I notice a sharp drop in water expenses and a significant saving in my utility bill! Wow! I don't mean that I have saved tonnes of money but in long term run, it could be quite substantial.

During bad time like the recent economic crisis, every drop of water counts. Global warming has contributed to climate change and in return caused serious drought problem across the world. Climate change is here to stay. It is our responsibility to save and conserve precious water not only can we save money but also to protect our water resource for our future generations.

This method of saving water and money helps to put the plastic water bottles into good use instead of dumping them into the rubbish bin. You can try with larger bottle (that can fit into your flushing tank) and other materials like plastic bag to hold pockets of water, pebbles, stones or even bricks as long as they do not block the flushing pipes.

Happy Saving!
